Review from Singletrack : February 2010

Rating: Even better than the originals

I've been a shameless zealot for the benefits of the previous incarnation of Shimano's winter boot, so i was keen to try their new and improved MT91. We still have full Nubuck leather outer, full Gore-Tex lining, with bellows toungue and a Vibram sole. Added to this now is a fuller, roomier toebox, chunkier lace lugs (with power-strap) and even more in the way of chunky rubber bumpers to protect your tootsies from bumps.
In the couple of months I've had these boots, they've been used as winter walking boots, flat pedal snow biking boots and big rides in the countryside and they've done brilliantly on all fronts.
The toebox is roomy enough to wiggle cold toes, or get away with thicker socks than normal and the boots are properly waterproof to around 3in. The only gripe would be its genuine Achilles heel - the cutaway that allows for unrestricted pedalling and walking is also good at letting in stone chips and water. If you're that worried about it, get some gaiters. I'd rather keep the instant comfort that the boots have because of it.
They're not as stiff as my carbon race shoes, but that's not a problem - you're unlikely to be fussing about getting full power out of your legs in the snow as much as you'll be worrying about keeping your feet warm and dry. The extra flex and cushioning means that hour-long pushes in the Lakes don't mean a blister-fest. £150 is a lot of cash to spend on any pair of shoes, but for a product that can genuinely increase the temperatures and conditions you can ride in, then they're worth every penny.

Overall:
Even better than the originals. Chunky, grippy, warm and comfortable.
Wearable for six months of a British year too.

"Shoes fully waterproof, warm as toast all winter in snow and rain. Light on the foot although look like a heavy boot. Very grippy on the occasional push area"
